Registering a trademark in the USA works much like registering one in the EU, with one key difference: to register in the USA, you must show that the sign is actually used in commerce – for example with a screenshot of your website, a copy of a brochure or a photo of the product.
The big advantage of a US trademark is that it protects your products or services in the world’s largest consumer market.

The US trademark registration process
US trademarks are registered with the USPTO – the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Unlike in the EU (where registration is handled by the EUIPO in Alicante), USPTO examiners very often object to the wording of the goods and services descriptions after an application is filed. These objections, known as provisional refusals, must be answered with a formal amendment to the application, and only attorneys licensed in the USA (in one of the US states) are allowed to assist in these proceedings.
